A few minutes later, the door opened and the bed dipped, August slipping into the sheets beside her. She smelled like lavender body wash. Maggie prayed for sleep, if not total oblivion, because she was not handling this. She couldn’t figure out how to breathe normally, how to sound actually asleep. Also, she felt a compulsive urge to swallow, like she couldn’t hold it back any longer, but it was too deeply silent out here in the woods. August breathed out a little sigh beside her, and Maggie took advantage of it to swallow her sudden excess saliva.
